What causes night sweats?

Waking up in the middle of the night tangled in bed sheets and covered in sweat is not a pleasant experience. For those who suffer from night sweats this feeling is all too familiar. Night sweats can be caused by a number of reasons which are worth looking into to work out a solution for this sleep interrupting experience.

If you every now and then wake up hot and sweaty, this is mostly likely just a matter of overheating in bed as a result of wearing too many clothes or not using breathable bed sheets. If this is the case the best sheets for night sweats can be found here.

So what else causes night sweats?  There are different reasons to look into that may be causing your sweats.  According to Laura M. Rosch, DO, an osteopathic internal medicine specialist from Wheaton, Illinois, “True night sweats are defined as severe hot flashes occurring at night that can drench sleepwear and sheets,”

You may be sick:

You may be suffering from a fever.  If you wake up drenched in sweat but also have cold chills you may have a contracted a virus or infection.  Less commonly, the cause of night sweats can also indicate serious medical conditions such as cancer, hormone disorders or neurologic conditions. If this is the case you most likely would be experiencing other symptoms in addition to the night sweats such as sudden weight loss.  If you are concerned at all and this is happening regularly the best thing to do is visit a doctor as soon as you can to rule out anything serious.

It could be hormonal:

Night sweats may occur during different times of a womens monthly cycle. At this time moisture wicking sheets are a good investment to make to reduce that uncomfortable feeling.  Additionally, a common symptom for those going through the transitional phase of menopause is hot flashes. This is very uncomfortable and often makes it difficult to fall back asleep.  The best sheets for menopause symptoms feature breathable material such as organic bamboo lyocell.

You may be stressed:

Stress and anxiety are common causes of waking up in a sweat. With demanding personal and work schedules many people are worrying more which is putting your body into overdrive resulting in you waking in the middle of the night drenched in sweat. If you are over-exercising, undernourishing your body or over-caffeinating this will not help. To combat, look at making any positive lifestyle changes you can and look into things such as meditation to help you relax.
