Breaking the Menopause Taboo: Ettitude Co-Founder Phoebe Yu on Navigating Symptoms, Solutions, and Self-Care

The study of women and their health has long been ignored. The result is that many women are left doing their research, seeking out expert advice, and demanding answers to long unanswered questions. Our very own co-founder, Phoebe Yu, is one of those women and she loves a good research project. Lately, she has been on a quest to ease her transition into menopause–a topic that is very hot (pun intended) in wellness circles. Let’s jump in and see what she has learned.

What has shocked you most about perimenopause/menopause?

The most shocking aspect of perimenopause/menopause is the wide range of unexpected symptoms that can occur. Aside from the expected hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and weight gain, I have also experienced ringing in the ears and increased clumsiness (hello bruises!).

I’ve since learned that changes in estrogen can impact ear function, leading to altered hearing or tinnitus. Similarly, hormonal shifts can affect coordination and balance, leading to more frequent bumps, trips, and unexplained bruises.

What resources have you found MOST helpful in learning more about menopause?

I am good at using Google search to find information, so I use it to learn more about menopause. And I also follow the Menopause subreddit.

What symptoms have plagued you most?

Hot flashes and mood swings are the symptoms that troubled me the most. Waking up drenched or suddenly sweating at a work meeting is not fun. And hormonal fluctuations often mimic or surpass the moodiness some experience during PMS. I was sometimes caught off guard by sudden bouts of anger, sadness, or anxiety that felt outside of my usual personality that I also don't love.

Any must-have products that have helped you?

Of course, my own ettitude CleanBamboo® sheets! CleanBamboo® is a breathable, cooling fabric that wicks moisture and dries quickly. The drying process transfers body heat away from me so I don't wake up in a pool of sweat and can fall back to sleep quickly.

Slightly controversial but have you tried HRT and if not, any reason why?

No, I have not. Because my symptoms are never so severe that I have to seek medical intervention, my secret weapons to combat the symptoms are a menopause-friendly diet, regular exercise, and the CleanBamboo® bedding

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone entering perimonopause/menopause?

As you step into perimenopause or menopause, my biggest piece of advice is to focus on nurturing your body and mind. Embrace a healthy lifestyle! Start by finding an exercise routine that you enjoy. Whether it’s dancing, walking, or hitting the gym, regular movement can boost your mood, help manage weight, and keep your bones strong.

Pay attention to what you eat as well. Fill your plate with colorful fruits, veggies, whole grains, and calcium-rich foods. Not only will this support your overall health, but it can also help ease some of those pesky menopausal symptoms. Don’t forget to take care of your mental well-being too. Try stress-relief techniques like yoga, meditation, or even just taking a few moments each day to breathe deeply and relax.

Any hack(s) that you cannot live without while you go through this time?

Homemade fresh soymilk! I grew up in Asia, and like many, I love freshly made soymilk. We even have a soymilk-making machine at home. See my recipe below.

It is the big drop in estrogen levels that causes most of the symptoms of menopause. So, eating more Phytoestrogen-containing foods can help relieve some of the symptoms. Phytoestrogens are natural food compounds that act as weak estrogens in your body. They are also antioxidants and anti-inflammatory.

Foods naturally containing phytoestrogens include soybeans, chickpeas, peanuts, flaxseed, barley, grapes, berries, plums, and green and black tea.
