In Your Element with Lala Lopez

In Your Element is a photo series and open dialogue with experts, community and thought leaders that truly practice what they preach.

This month we sat down with beauty gurus to talk about clean beauty and get tips on how to transition to a toxic-free regiment. Lala Lopez, an NYC-based model and influencer, believes that implementing a holistic clean beauty routine has improved her quality of life on all fronts.

When did you begin in your transition into a cleaner beauty routine?

I started off first with my haircare back in 2011. I had just started wearing my hair naturally curly after a lifetime of straightening and blow-drying. I made a conscious decision that I was not straightening my hair and embracing the texture I was born with. I wanted the hair products I was using to care for my curls to be nourishing and care for them in a way I hadn’t before. I started out with using hair care products made with no sulfates, silicones, parabens. As I got deeper into my curly hair journey, I started concocting my own all 100% natural masks, scalp treatments and deep conditioners that I still implement into my hair care routine every week.

Your curls are amazing! How did that change affect the other parts of your beauty routine?

I was loving all the intentionality that was going into my haircare, so when I started to really buckle down on my skincare routine – I leaned towards more companies that were using more simple ingredients and more green approach to beauty. Some of my favorite skincare brands that my skin truly loves are Kat Burki, Goldfaden MD, Vintner’s Daughter, Noto, Linear Beauty, Fur,  Malin + Goetz, Apto & Pai.

How have your clean beauty changes impacted your day-to-day life beyond your self-care routine?

I think once you begin to implement clean beauty into your life, it begins to creep into all parts of your life – which is amazing. It’s making an effort to create an intentional approach to how you live. It feels good inside and out.

I buy organic and local produce as much as possible.  And I certainly keep my cleaning products as squeaky clean as I’m able to.

I make my own all-purpose cleaner with Thieves essential oil, I wash my clothes with non-toxic detergent, and only use non-toxic cleaning and body care products. There’s always this thought that I have in the back of mind, that when I have a child, I will have already implemented the practices that feel responsible to keep them safe, healthy and less exposed to toxic chemicals in my home.

Is there anyone in your life that impacted your interpretation of clean beauty?

My aunt introduced me to clean living through essential oils many years ago and it completely changed the way I took care of my body, my health, and home from a physical and spiritual perspective. Having worked with essential oils for so long, she passed on all of her knowledge of how I can support my body with the purest form of natural essence that comes from the earth. My introduction to essential oils through her was definitely a gateway to a significantly cleaner lifestyle. And even more important to me, using ingredients from nature to support my spiritual practices and feel more grounded to the earth.
