This month we sat down with industry creatives to talk about seasonal transitions, get tips on how to adapt their home to the changing weather and live a more sustainable lifestyle. Connie Cao, a travel, sustainability and lifestyle blogger from Melbourne, talks to us about how she navigates seasonal changes at home as well as her winter comfort creatures.
Hi, Connie! Can you please tell us a bit about yourself and your work?
Hey everyone! I’m Connie, I’m a travel, lifestyle & sustainable living blogger at @connieandluna. I’m based in Melbourne, Australia and I love sharing my passions and interests with my audience. I also create small batch handcrafted jewellery and flower crowns too at @connieandlunastudio and sometimes I document my garden at @leafkeeper too!
What does comfort mean to you?
Comfort to me is being cozy at home. I love lots of soft furnishings around the house and in particular pillows, cushions and blankets to keep warm and cozy through the winter!
How do you create comfort at home in winter and do you make any changes to welcome the cooler weather?
When winter comes, I love taking out all our throws and having them in easy reach on the couch, day bed.. even my office chair! If I’m home all day, I love lighting a candle as well to bring in that feeling of warmth.
What is your relationship with winter?
I’ve got to say that Melbourne winters are quite chilly compared to the rest of Australia so I do prefer the milder seasons instead! That said, a nice sunny day in winter here is gorgeous. The air is crisp, and it feels so lovely without being hot!
In winter, we tend to spend more time indoors, how do you like to hibernate?
I love snuggling on the couch with my little papillon (Toro) and reading a book on my e-reader. I recently got an e-reader and it has totally changed my reading habits making it so convenient to read anywhere and especially in bed!
You have so many beautiful spaces in your home – what’s your favourite room or nook and why?
Aww thanks! My favourite space is probably our back garden which I’m slowly converting into an urban food garden. We recently finished building our veggie garden which I designed myself so it has been soo wonderful to be out there, tend to the plants and harvest for my cooking!
Is there a creative thread or common thread you keep returning to in your creative work?
I love I think in everything I do I’m always really inspired by nature. Nature gives us so much in the form of resources, beauty and a healthy environment and I always find myself being immersed and intrigued by it.
Can you share your top tips on living a more considered and sustainable lifestyle?
A few super easy things to get started on a more sustainable lifestyle is to 1) begin composting your food scraps! This makes a huge difference in terms of how much you’re throwing out in the rubbish bin every week and can really kickstart your motivation to do even more. The second thing I would recommend is to focus on removing single use plastics from your day-to-day. There are heaps of alternatives out there to things like cling wrap, straws, shopping bags, storage bags and the like and any little step you take in the right direction adds up in the end. I have heaps of these kinds of tips on my blog. 🙂
