Sleeping is one of the greatest joys in life to so many. A well deserved night’s rest is so important to your health and well-being. Studies now show that what you wear to bed impacts on your quality of sleep. And the best sleepwear, according to science, is.. nothing! The benefits of sleeping in your birthday suit are countless.
Here are five reasons to ditch your pj’s and become a healthier savvy naked sleeper.
#1 Raise the comfort factors
First of all, at the most basic level, it’s oh so comfortable. There are no annoying pajamas to twist or bunch up. Tight elastic bands and straps often found in pajamas can cut off your circulation and disable oxygen-rich blood flow to the vital organs such as your heart and major arteries. When naked you will feel more comfortable, relaxed and calm, ensuring you can slip into sleep time with ease.
#2 Just breathe
We spend our days wearing clothing, often constricting and tight – trapping our skin and body parts. This can cause clogged pores and skin diseases. Your private parts, armpits, and feet also need to breathe so as to prevent infection and bacteria. Sleeping naked greatly benefits our bodies, giving much needed time to rest and regenerate.
#3 Banish belly fat and stay cool
Yes, you can reduce belly fat by gaining a good night’s sleep. Belly fat is directly linked to a hormone called cortisol. When we have a restless nights sleep due to getting too warm or being uncomfortable, our bodies release a higher level of cortisol than we need. This increase in cortisol causes all sorts of problems including: craving comfort food, raising blood pressure, stress, anxiety and lowering libido. Sleeping expert Shawn Stevenson and author of Sleep Smarter: 21 Essential Strategies to Sleep Your Way to a Better Body, Better Health and Bigger Success adds to this and introduces further benefits of keeping body temperature lower.
“Health-wise, it’s important to let your body cool down during sleep. Cooling down will lower your blood pressure, which in turn helps your body activate its “rest and digest system” — otherwise known as the parasympathetic nervous system. Cooling down also helps the body release certain hormones and reparative enzymes”, he said.
#4 Go on, have a cuddle
A hormone we do want to be raised is oxytocin. This feel-good hormone is created when we have skin on skin contact, in any form… so if you and your partner are both sleeping in the buff there is a much higher chance that intimacy will occur, not to mention not being off put but the presence of a full set of flannel! The release of oxytocin, otherwise known as the ‘cuddle’ or ‘love’ hormone also counteracts stress and depression by combating cortisol and reducing blood pressure. It’s a win-win!
#5 Confidence is key
Most importantly, sleeping in the nude will make you feel confident and sexy. As your comfort with your body increases, so does your self-esteem and confidence. Feel good in the skin you’re in and own it!
Best Bedding for Naked Sleepers
As we can see the benefits of sleeping naked are surprising and important. Another factor to consider is the bedding we choose. It is recommended that natural fibers and fabrics are the best options to choose if you’re planning on sleeping in the nude (and you should be). You’ll be physically touching your bedding for hours on end so you want it to be breathable and kind to your skin. Go for high-quality natural fabrics where possible and extra points if it’s organic and sustainably made.
Changing the world – one sleep at a time

Some goodies are 100% organic bamboo sheets as it’s hypoallergenic and wicks away moistures and odors, not to mention being sensuous and soft. It protects your delicate skin and hair against any irritation and external stress.
Sweet dreams!
This is a great article. I just wanted to add that the best sheets to sleep on are Linen sheets. For bamboo to become threads then to become a fabric includes alot of chemical process to create. Bamboo is not easily spun into threads without the use of harsh chemicals.
Hi Lisa,
We’re glad you enjoyed the post! Just to let you know, our process of making bamboo lyocell differs greatly from the bamboo rayon/viscose mixes which are the most common form of bamboo bedding on the market. We don’t use any harmful chemicals and are Oeko-Tex Standard certified.
Check out this article which breaks down the difference between different types of bamboo bedding. Thanks! 🙂
Hey there! I’ve been following your weblog for some time now and finally got
the courage to go ahead and give you a shout out from New Caney Texas!
Just wanted to tell you keep up the great work!
I prefer sleeping naked. I sweat a lot until I got a bamboo bed sheet. The feel is very different from the usual type of sheet. It’s breathable and feels very light.
I want to eventually try bamboo sheets
